This training will prepare nurses in the Emergency Department to work with patients presenting with an opioid use disorder event. The goal of the training is to provide nurses with tools to screen, assess, and initiate treatment with approved agonist medications under the direction of a waivered provider.

This training will cover the basics of addiction medicine including: the disease model of substance use disorders, medications for treatment of opioid and alcohol use disorders, and the initial assessment and screening of patients at risk. It will also address concerns for special populations and the treatment of addiction in specialized urgent care and emergency room settings.
Check-in for the course will be from 12:30 PM-1:00 PM, and the course will run from 1:00 PM-4:30 PM.
Light refreshments will be provided. Please let us know of any dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate them.
This is an in-person training. There will not be an option to attend via webinar.
Nurses and other clinical staff caring for patients with substance use disorders in the emergency department.
The learner will: Define opioid use and alcohol use disorders; Understand the methods of screening patients at risk; and Outline tools for initiating and referring patients engaged in Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT).
Boston Medical Center Grayken Center for Addiction. This event is funded by grants from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services.
Boston Medical Center grants 3.25 nursing contact hours to nurses who complete this program. You must stay for the entire program, and complete an evaluation form. Boston Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
