Description

This training is meant for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) working in the addiction field who are interested in becoming Certified Addictions Registered Nurses - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). The course is intended to support nurses studying for the certification exam by reviewing test-taking tips and strategies for answering exam questions, including reviewing practice questions, rationales, and associated resources. 

Individuals should take our exam review course or have the associated knowledge base before taking this test-taking strategies training to maximize the benefits of doing practice questions to prepare for the exam.

Intended audience

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) with experience treating patients with addiction who intend to sit for the CARN-AP exam.

Speakers

Judith Austin, MSN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP (she/her)

Judith is a Clinical Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction TTA program, teaching the Addiction Nursing Certification Review course. In addition, Judith works at an inpatient substance use disorder treatment facility, has a private practice, and is the playwright and performer of a one-woman show entitled Spiro Spero, a play about addiction, utilizing art to promote education and awareness surrounding addiction at various colleges, nursing and medical schools, and conferences. 

Vanessa Loukas, MSN, FNP-C, CARN-AP (she/her)

Vanessa is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, a Clinical Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) program, and a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center with clinical expertise in treating addiction, co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and infectious diseases in primary care with clinical interests in harm reduction, low-barrier treatment, and medical addiction groups. Her background in acute treatment services as a registered nurse and her current practice inform her work instructing the Addiction Nursing Certification Review course offered through Grayken Center for Addiction TTA since 2018. 

Objectives

• Describe the role of the test blueprint in identifying topics and domains covered on the CARN-AP exam.
• Identify strategies for breaking down the stem of a question, including identifying the knowledge or skill being assessed by the question.
• Demonstrate ability to reason through answer options and eliminate distractors by doing practice questions.
• Recognize content to focus on studying in preparation for the exam.

REQUIREMENTS for credit

1. Register for training
2. Arrive/log into the Zoom meeting with the same email address associated with your addictiontraining.org user account no more than 10 minutes after designated start time for program.
3. Ensure the email you used to register is the same email you use for Zoom registration when entering the training and that your full name matches your Zoom name to be marked as attended.
4. Be present through the end of the activity (i.e. until the designated end time of training).
5. Complete evaluation within 2 weeks of program completion.

Please note this policy is strictly enforced for accreditation purposes. Participants will forfeit collection of credit and certificates of completion if more than 10 minutes of the training is missed.
