This training will review the medical ethics and tenets of harm reduction and why they are important in expanding the care continuum of people who use drugs and alcohol. It will provide practical examples of how to write and create policies from a harm reduction perspective. It will include the legalities of including harm reduction practices in different healthcare settings and considerations for harm reduction for providers with licenses.

This training will focus on harm reduction techniques for nicotine and tobacco use. Participants will be able to identify evidence-based strategies that may reduce nicotine/tobacco consumption. It will cover harm reduction properties of switching from combustible cigarette consumption to electronic-nicotined delivery systems; how to individualize treatment by learning how to modify FDA-approved medications;Â and how to identify barriers to smoking cessation among individuals with substance use disorder, from both clinician and patient standpoints.

This training will review strategies to reduce communicable infectious diseases associated with injection drug use; testing strategies and linkage to care for those patients with diagnosed blood-borne pathogens; bleaching/sterilization of injection paraphernalia, serosorting or sequential drug use to prevent infection of uninfected partners; and pharmacological interventions for infection prevention including nPEP and PrEP.

This training will review strategies to reduce non-communicable infectious diseases in patients that use injection drugs. Safer injection technique, equipment needed for safe injection, and strategies to reduce skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) will be discussed. Additional education will be provided about the basics of wound and abscess care for patients to prevent worsening SSTIs.

This training will focus on the sexual health-related risks associated with substance use disorder. The impact of survival sex and sex work on the well-being of both men and women and strategies to reduce violence and infections in this population will be explored. Pharmacological interventions for HIV prevention including nPEP, PrEP, and the concept of U=U will be reviewed. Participants will be able to define STI testing strategies for the SUD provider and treatment considerations for patients on medication for addiction treatment.

This training will review the burden of disease and the impact of alcohol in the United States. It will discuss quit strategies and clinical approaches to reduction in alcohol use. It will also address strategies to reduce harm associated with binge consumption of alcohol. The impact of alcohol on other SUD treatment will be discussed and the use of medications for alcohol use disorder will be reviewed.
