Topic: Special Populations
This one-hour course will review current epidemiological trends related to smoking and tobacco/nicotine use disorder among gender and sexuality diverse (GSD) people. Contributing factors to higher rates of combustible cigarette and electronic cigarette consumption will be reviewed through a minority stress framework. The course will review strategies for improving cultural responsiveness for GSD populations to increase quit attempts, improve harm reduction implementation related to nicotine consumption, improve primary prevention of smoking, and improve tobacco cessation efforts. Following a 45-minute didactic there will be a 15-minute Q+A to address current questions and concerns related to smoking cessation among GSD populations.

This training is designed to provide an introductory overview of alcohol use disorders. We will explore the latest epidemiological data, with a focus on the prevalence and trends of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders in the United States. Diagnostic criteria and screening tools to assess for alcohol use disorders will be discussed. Additionally, we will examine evidence-based interventions to treat alcohol use disorders and support individuals in their recovery.

This training is meant for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) working in the addiction field who are interested in becoming Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). The course is intended to support nurses studying for the certification exam by reviewing content covered in the exam and providing additional educational resources relevant to the exam.
