As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, Gregory Dorchak will discuss how federal civil rights statutes protect individuals with substance use disorders and explain how to file complaints or raise issues with violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

Topic: Harm Reduction
This training reviews the basics of overdose education and response, including caring for patients with a history of overdose and the efficacy of bystander overdose education and prevention. We will focus on novel overdose prevention strategies, including test strips, sedation monitoring centers, safe consumption sites, and safe supply. Further, this training identifies naloxone (Narcan's) mechanism of action.

This training is meant for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) working in the addiction field who are interested in becoming Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). The course is intended to support nurses studying for the certification exam by reviewing content covered in the exam and providing additional educational resources relevant to the exam.

This training provides knowledge on xylazine, a CNS depressant, linked to an increasing number of overdose deaths in the US. This describes the physiologic effects of xylazine, manifestations of xylazine intoxication, overdose, communicable infections associated with xylazine use, and wound care for persons injecting xylazine.
