Topic: Alcohol
This training is designed to provide an introductory overview of alcohol use disorders. We will explore the latest epidemiological data, with a focus on the prevalence and trends of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders in the United States. Diagnostic criteria and screening tools to assess for alcohol use disorders will be discussed. Additionally, we will examine evidence-based interventions to treat alcohol use disorders and support individuals in their recovery.

The course is intended to support nurses studying for the certification exam by reviewing content covered in the exam and providing additional educational resources relevant to the exam.

As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, Rebekah Joab and Sally Friedman will discuss how federal civil rights statutes protect individuals with substance use disorders and explain how to file complaints or raise issues with violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

Topic: Harm Reduction
This training reviews the basics of overdose education and response, including caring for patients with a history of overdose and the efficacy of bystander overdose education and prevention. We will focus on novel overdose prevention strategies, including test strips, sedation monitoring centers, safe consumption sites, and safe supply. Further, this training identifies naloxone (Narcan's) mechanism of action.

Topic: Special Populations
This training supports youth-facing providers and care teams. Utilizing didactic discussion, we will describe the prevalence of youth substance use (SU) and emerging trends, paying specific attention to common substances, such as nicotine, cannabis and alcohol. We will review youth-specific risks of SU, including acute and chronic harms; discuss overdose education and naloxone; and highlight communication tools that support working with youth who use substances.
