Topic: Cannabis & Nicotine
This specialized training focuses on the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis, with an emphasis on early identification, intervention, and long-term care. Participants will learn to identify risk factors for psychosis and psychotic-like experiences related to cannabis use, recognize the clinical features of cannabis-induced psychosis, and describe at least two interventions for managing acute episodes. The session also explores strategies to reduce long-term harm and support recovery in individuals with a history of cannabis-related psychosis.

This training is designed to enhance participants’ knowledge of cannabis use among youth, with a focus on product potency, health outcomes, and harm reduction. Attendees will explore the roles of THC and CBD in determining the strength and effects of cannabis products commonly used by youth, recall three key health outcomes linked to youth cannabis use, and identify potential risks and adverse effects. The session also introduces foundational strategies to help mitigate the harms associated with youth cannabis use.

As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Andrea Jakubowski, MD, MS, will describe the clinical rationale and evidence for initiating long-acting injectable buprenorphine without prolonged sublingual stabilization in people who inject opioids, and discuss practical strategies for initiating, administering, and following patients started on injectable buprenorphine. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Elisabeth Woodhams, MD, MSc, will review key sexual and reproductive health risks and disparities experienced by people with substance use disorder, including the impact of substance use on consent, STI risk, and unintended pregnancy and apply trauma-informed, patient-centered approaches to sexual health counseling for people with SUD, including discussing contraception options such as long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

Topic: Alcohol
Many individuals experiencing mild alcohol withdrawal syndrome can be safely and successfully managed in the outpatient setting, allowing less interruption to one’s professional, family, and social obligations. This training will provide an overview of alcohol withdrawal assessment and management in an outpatient setting. Participants will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and appropriate candidates for outpatient withdrawal management. Validated tools to assess alcohol withdrawal will be reviewed and evidence-based medication management for outpatient alcohol withdrawal will be discussed.
